OPERATION USA RESPONDS TO FLOODING IN IOWA
Repeating its extensive 6-state Midwest flood relief work through its “Operation Heartland” project of 1993, Operation USA announced today that it would assist local health clinics throughout Iowa in replacing equipment and supplies lost to the widespread flooding. Funds permitting, Operation USA will make a series of small grants to assist nonprofit institutions in Iowa so that they can maintain services to flood-affected communities. Operation USA also has access to large amounts of seeds for small family farms affected by the flooding.
Richard M. Walden, President of Operation USA, said: “This catastrophic flooding will affect all Americans as the corn crop we rely on Iowa farmers to produce will no doubt be drastically reduced. We hope all Americans will join our small but well focused relief effort and assist local nonprofits in Iowa to provide services to flood victims, especially the children. Iowa can only add to what threatens to become a 'Tsunami Of Hunger'."

CHINA EARTHQUAKE
AID RESPONSE UPDATE
As of June 1, the death toll from the May 12 magnitude 7.9 earthquake that struck China’s Sichuan Province, has risen to 69,172 people, with 17,420 people missing and 374,159 injured. There are an estimated 4.8 million homeless and/or displaced with that number possibly reaching as high as 11 million, as people move to avoid “quake lakes” and aftershocks. Over 9,000 children and teachers perished in the collapse of 7,000 school buildings. Thirty-six hospitals have severe damage or have been completely destroyed.
The world’s response has been very significant. The Chinese Government has been especially engaged in quake rescue and relief activities at all levels and tens of millions of overseas Chinese in dozens of countries have given generously to those in need through benevolent associations, directly to families and through many of the major NGOs.
The Honeywell Corporation is supporting Operation USA’s response to the quake which focuses on the near and medium term replacement of schools and clinics in Sichuan. Other corporate donors are engaged: Kaiser Permanente Medical Group (hospital supplies and equipment); Cascade Designs (shelter materials and water purification equipment); and, JM Eagle Corp. (restoration of water resources). The Henyep Foundation of Hong Kong has committed logistical and program oversight assistance as has Half The Sky, a Hong Kong based foundation with children’s educational programs throughout China.

All of our work is guided by the principle of Smart Aid.
WHAT IS SMART AID?
- Providing aid through integrating an immediate response with long-term projects which are sustainable and mitigate the effect of future disasters.
- Working in places often overlooked by larger aid organizations and governments.
- Searching for challenges where few NGOs have experience, unafraid of highly politicized areas, and employing novel approaches
- Listening to communities’ voices to determine the best way to assist them, enabling them to become their own advocates in the wider world we live in.
